Mercedes 180 HP Engine

b-25.jpg

The Mercedes 180 hp engine replaced the 160 hp powerplant fitted to the Albatros DIII. This part of the model is a labour in its own right and requires many hours of carefull finishing of the cast metal components before it can be assembled.

Below is a view of the basic engine plus propellor. At the side is the exhaust pipe- this has to be drilled out carefully using a small drill.

The cylinders are painted black, and the rest of the engine was given a wash of Humbrol Matt Black and thinners to simulate the oil leakage and general grime of the engine.

The propellor has been sanded to its final shape but awaits staining, varnishing and application of the manufacturers logo.

The basic engine is a kit in its own right and consists of about 200 seperate parts cast in white metal.

This is the overhead camshaft- this consists of 25 seperate parts alone including 12 tiny valve springs. It is a fiddly job to install them all.
